Ed Sheeran cancels both Gillette Stadium shows as the nor'easter moves in

Ed Sheeran won't be playing Gillette Stadium this weekend after all.

Both of his shows in Foxborough, tonight and Saturday night, were canceled this morning because of the nor'easter moving into New England.

What happened

Gillette Stadium made the call along with the tour and the promoter after talking with local officials. The storm is expected to bring heavy rain, wind gusts over 50 mph near the coast and flooding through the weekend. Saturday is supposed to be the worst of it.

“The decision was made with the safety of fans, staff and everyone involved in the shows as the top priority,” the stadium said.

Crews had already stopped building the stage on Thursday night while everyone waited to see how bad the forecast would get.

If you bought through Ticketmaster, you'll get your money back automatically. If you bought somewhere else, like a resale site, you need to ask them for a refund yourself.

Nobody has said yet whether the shows will be rescheduled. Sheeran's Loop Tour picks back up October 3 in Atlanta.

Background

The weather is the official reason for the cancellation. The shows had already drawn attention this month because of a change to the lineup.

Macklemore was recently dropped as an opening act after saying “Free Palestine” on stage. Patriots owner Robert Kraft, who owns Gillette, barred Macklemore from performing at the stadium. Kraft said Macklemore’s comments crossed a line and were offensive to the Jewish community. Macklemore has alleged that Kraft also pushed other stadium owners to have him removed from the tour. Other opening acts, including Lukas Graham, left the tour after that.

Around 200 people asked for refunds because of the lineup change. The Massachusetts Attorney General's Office stepped in this week and got Ticketmaster to agree to give those refunds. A group had also planned a protest outside the stadium for the second show, which we covered earlier this week.

What to watch for: whether Sheeran announces new Foxborough dates, and whether they end up coming with a new lineup.
