White House Fires Kimberly Guilfoyle as U.S. Ambassador to Greece

The White House asked Guilfoyle to resign on Tuesday, ending weeks of speculation over her conduct after reports of misconduct surfaced.

The White House has asked Kimberly Guilfoyle to resign as the United States ambassador to Greece, ending weeks of speculation about her future after a series of reports raised questions about her conduct.

“We have asked Ambassador Guilfoyle to resign,” new press secretary Katie Zacharia said Tuesday during her first press briefing. “She has been a wonderful asset to the team, and we wish her luck.”

The move followed reporting by The Wall Street Journal that Republican donor Eric Deters accused Guilfoyle of asking him to wire $100,000 to pay off an American Express bill in the days before her Senate confirmation hearing last year. Deters said Guilfoyle promised to be his “ride or die” in the Trump administration if he paid, and told CNN last week, “No question it was a quid pro quo.” Deters did not send the money, saying he lacked the liquid assets at the time.

Guilfoyle’s lawyers disputed the authenticity of the messages and said Deters owed Guilfoyle money for speeches and consulting work. “When Ms. Guilfoyle was preparing to leave private life for public service, she did what any professional does and tried to close out her outstanding receivables,” her lawyers said in a statement to CNN. “Asking a client to pay for work already done is not corruption. It is the opposite of corruption.”

Other reports said Guilfoyle accepted lavish gifts as ambassador and brought a lobbyist for a Greek construction company into official meetings. Her lawyers denied the allegations about seeking money and said she complied with federal gift and reporting requirements. CNN also reported that the State Department’s Office of Inspector General is investigating her.

Trump said Monday he was weighing whether to fire her. “Well, we’re looking at it. Yeah, we’re not happy,” he told reporters. Vice President JD Vance said last week the facts needed to come out first. “You don’t take messages that people allegedly had between one person or another, or one person’s story, and say, ‘Oh, because of that, Kimberly Guilfoyle is guilty.’ I think that’s absurd,” he said.

Guilfoyle, a former Fox News host who was engaged to Trump’s eldest son Donald Trump Jr. for four years, was sworn in as ambassador in September 2025. She was one of the first ambassadors Trump named for his second term. Her representatives did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Tuesday.
