ICE Agent Shoots Man in Bronx During Arrest; Protests Clash With Police at Hospital
A federal agent shot a Dominican man in the Marble Hill neighborhood Thursday afternoon while a 5-year-old child sat in the car. The man survived. Hundreds of protesters gathered at the hospital Thursday night.

An immigration agent shot and wounded a man during an arrest in New York City on Thursday. The gunfire erupted around 4 p.m. in Marble Hill, a small part of Manhattan that is attached to the Bronx.
The man survived. A 5-year-old child was inside the car with him and was not hurt, city officials said.
The Department of Homeland Security said its officers were conducting a “targeted enforcement operation” to arrest a Dominican man with a prior grand larceny conviction and other arrests. The agency said an ICE officer discharged his weapon and the man was injured. The NYPD said the man was conscious and receiving medical attention at a hospital. The agency did not describe what led to the shooting.
Pedro Almaraz, who works at a restaurant nearby, said he heard three or four gunshots and saw a man on the ground surrounded by officers wearing masks and vests with Department of Homeland Security branding. Bystander video posted online showed a man sitting on the ground with his hands behind his back, and another showed police carrying an apparently injured man into a police vehicle.
Thursday night, several hundred demonstrators marched from the scene to NewYork-Presbyterian Allen Hospital, where the man is being treated. They chanted “ICE off our streets now!” At the hospital entrance, police set up barricades to keep a lane open for ambulances. Some protesters shoved at the barriers and threw water bottles at officers, and police made arrests.
At a press conference near the scene, Council Member Carmen De La Rosa, who represents the neighborhood, said officials were “heartbroken and enraged.” Public Advocate Jumaane Williams and other elected officials also condemned the shooting.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani called the shooting “unconscionable and incredibly serious.” He said he had called President Donald Trump and would demand that the president end all federal immigration enforcement actions in the city. “I will not stand by while ICE agents terrorize our communities,” Mamdani said. He has previously called for abolishing ICE.
Gov. Kathy Hochul said she had been briefed on the shooting and expected the Trump administration to provide “a full and transparent accounting of the circumstances.”
DHS, in its statement, blamed “reckless sanctuary policies,” saying officers are forced to make arrests in unpredictable conditions when people are released instead of being turned over. The agency said New York police arrested the man in December 2023 and released him days later.
The Associated Press reports that ICE agents have fired their guns during more than a dozen vehicle stops since last year, killing at least four people and wounding others. In late September, ICE ordered officers not to engage in high-speed car chases and to make vehicle stops only if they have completed specific training.
Federal authorities are investigating the shooting. The NYPD said its officers were not involved.
