‘Other Mommy’ Wins the Box Office With the Worst Audience Grade in Two Years
Jessica Chastain’s horror film is headed for a No. 1 opening weekend of about $28 million. CinemaScore gave it a D+ — the worst grade for any movie in two years.

Jessica Chastain’s Other Mommy is headed for a No. 1 opening. Audiences do not seem to like it.
The supernatural horror film took in about $13 million on Friday from 3,365 screens, including Thursday night previews, according to TheWrap. The Hollywood Reporter projects a $28 million opening weekend. Universal’s release cost $19 million to make, so it should clear its break-even mark by the end of its run.
The catch is the exit polling. CinemaScore gave the film a D+. That is the worst audience grade handed to any film in two years, going back to Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis in September 2024. Critics were no kinder: Other Mommy holds a 20% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 47% audience score.
Weak reception usually eats into a horror film’s legs. TheWrap notes the Monday actual could come in closer to $20 million if Saturday and Sunday turnout sags.
Rob Savage directed the film. Savage made his name with Host and The Boogeyman. Nathan Elston wrote the script, adapting Josh Malerman’s 2024 novel Incidents Around the House. James Wan produced through his Blumhouse–Atomic Monster banner. Chastain plays two roles: Ursula, the mother of a young daughter, Bela, and the entity that takes Ursula’s shape inside the family’s home. Jay Duplass, Arabella Olivia Clark, Dichen Lachman, Arian Moayed and Karen Allen co-star. The film runs 93 minutes and is rated R.
The rest of the weekend was quiet. Sony’s The Social Reckoning made $2.1 million on Friday from 2,606 locations, on pace for a $6 million opening. That is less than a third of the $22.4 million 2010’s The Social Network opened with. The overall box office slipped under $90 million for the second weekend in a row.
