The Story, Not the Spin

Powderfinger Reunite for First Tour in 17 Years, Announcing 18 Australian Shows in 2027

The Brisbane band will play six cities next September and October inside stadium-sized big tops, their first tour since the Sunsets Farewell Tour ended in 2010.

Powderfinger are getting back together. The Brisbane band announced Monday an 18-date tour across Australia for September and October 2027. It is their first national tour in 17 years.

The five-piece — singer Bernard Fanning, guitarists Darren Middleton and Ian Haug, bassist John “JC” Collins and drummer Jon Coghill — split in 2010 after the Sunsets Farewell Tour. The last show was that November at Brisbane’s Riverstage. They reformed once, for a one-off charity livestream in May 2020, but have not toured since.

The 2027 shows will travel like a circus. The band is billing the run a “rock n roll circus,” with each concert staged inside a stadium-sized big top on central city grounds. Support acts will be drawn exclusively from Australian artists, and the shows will raise funds and awareness for the charity Mission Australia.

“We are absolutely ecstatic to be coming together to play again,” the band said in a statement. They said fans had asked them to return for years, but the timing never worked for all five of them until now.

The announcement

The news came in a video posted to the band’s Instagram on Monday morning Australian time. Fanning told fans the group had long promised they would be told first if a reunion ever happened. “We always said if we were going to get back together to do some shows that you guys would be the first to know,” he said.

The band said the decision is also about reaching a new generation, including fans who never saw them live and their own children, who were too young in 2010.

The itinerary

The tour opens with four nights at Brisbane Showgrounds on September 3, 4, 10 and 11. It then moves to Cazalys Stadium in Cairns (September 17 and 18), Wellington Square in Perth (September 24 and 25), and The Domain in Sydney (October 1, 2, 8 and 9). Two nights at Ellis Park in Adelaide follow on October 15 and 16, before four closing shows at Melbourne Park Oval on October 22, 23, 29 and 30.

Artist and Telstra presales open Wednesday, October 14. Tickets go on general sale Monday, October 19.

Powderfinger formed in Brisbane in 1989 and went on to win 18 ARIA Awards, among the most of any Australian band. Their catalog includes “My Happiness,” “These Days,” “Sunsets,” “(Baby I’ve Got You) On My Mind” and “Pick You Up.”
