Rolling Stones Release ‘Bad Luck Hideaway,’ a Lost Track With Charlie Watts on Drums

The song was cut at British Grove in December 2015 with the late drummer, sat as an iTunes-only bonus track, and arrived Monday as the B-side to the ‘Mr Charm’ single.

The Rolling Stones put out a new old song on Monday. “Bad Luck Hideaway” is the B-side to the band’s latest single, “Mr Charm,” and it features the late Charlie Watts on drums.

The track pairs a vocal duet between Mick Jagger and Keith Richards — the band called it “a rare Mick and Keith vocal duet” — with a drum take cut at London’s British Grove studios in December 2015, during the sessions that produced the band’s 2016 blues record Blue & Lonesome. Watts died in 2021. The song was finished later with his performance intact and produced by Andrew Watt, who also produced the band’s last two albums.

The song first surfaced this summer as a bonus track on iTunes editions of Foreign Tongues, the Stones’ July album. Until Monday it was not available on streaming services. It is now out in the open as a proper release.

Foreign Tongues arrived in July via Capitol Records, the follow-up to 2023’s Hackney Diamonds. The 14-track record reunited Jagger, Richards and Ronnie Wood with Watt, and was recorded in under a month at Metropolis Studios in West London.

The A-side comes with a new video of its own. Henry Scholfield directed the clip for “Mr Charm,” shot in Palmdale, California, and it stars Alexander Skarsgård. The band has made a habit of handing its recent videos to Hollywood actors: Anya Taylor-Joy and Charles Melton appeared in “Jealous Lover,” and Odessa A’zion in “In the Stars.”
