U2 announces new album Carnaval de Luz, out November 13

U2 is back with new music for the first time in nine years.

The band announced Thursday that their 16th studio album, Carnaval de Luz, drops November 13. It's their first album of all new songs since 2017's Songs of Experience.

The album

Carnaval de Luz has 12 tracks and was produced by Jacknife Lee, who's worked with U2 since 2004. The first single, "Silencio," a short and raw punk song, is out now.

Bono revealed the title earlier this week on the Irish Times podcast, calling the record "strong stuff." The Edge said the band worked as hard on this one as anything they've ever made.

A Dolly Parton duet closes it out

The closing track, "Torn," is a duet between Bono and Dolly Parton. It's Parton's final recorded vocal performance. She died on August 25, and the song was co-written with her and Snow Patrol's Johnny McDaid.

Longtime collaborator Brian Eno co-wrote and played synths on three tracks, including opener "Go (Carnaval de Luz)." Rosalía appears on "The Mirror Maker."

Perfect timing

The announcement lands one day before U2's 50th anniversary. The band first played together in Larry Mullen Jr.'s kitchen on September 25, 1976.
