At least five people were killed and 12 more were injured in a shooting in Krakow on Saturday afternoon. A gunman fired into a crowd in the city’s Main Market Square.

The shooting happened shortly after 3 p.m. local time. A car drove into the square, and the gunman opened fire from inside it, local police said.

Early reports put the toll at two dead and at least 10 injured. Police later raised it to at least five killed and 12 injured, including two police officers. The numbers were still being updated on Saturday afternoon.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk said he was being kept informed by the interior minister. “The police are investigating the background and all the circumstances of the attack,” he wrote on X.

The investigation

Police have not said who the gunman was or why he opened fire. No motive had been given by Saturday afternoon.

Krakow’s Main Market Square, known as Rynek Główny, is the city’s central square and one of the largest medieval squares in Europe. It was busy on a Saturday afternoon.
