The Gilded Age returns Sunday night. The first of eight new episodes airs on HBO and HBO Max at 9 p.m. ET, with new episodes each Sunday through December 20.

The season opens with an episode titled “Ring the Bells.” HBO has not released plot details beyond its official logline, which says Bertha Russell changed Society at a cost, and now her family must reckon with the consequences.

Season 3 ended with the Russell marriage in trouble. George Russell survived an attempt on his life, then left his wife Bertha. Their daughter Gladys is pregnant with the Duke of Buckingham’s child. Their son Larry has made amends of a sort with Marian Brook.

The new season picks up those threads. Agnes van Rhijn, played by Christine Baranski, looks to regain her position in the house. Marian, played by Louisa Jacobson, forges a new path for herself. Peggy Scott, played by Denée Benton, works to be accepted by her future in-laws.

Carrie Coon returns as Bertha Russell. Morgan Spector is back as George Russell. Baranski, Jacobson, Benton, Cynthia Nixon, Taissa Farmiga, Harry Richardson and Audra McDonald also return.

Two familiar faces will not be back this season. Deadline reported that Patrick Page and Sullivan Jones will not appear in Season 4. Page played Richard Clay, George Russell’s secretary. Jones played T. Thomas Fortune, the New York Globe publisher and Peggy Scott’s former editor.

Both actors were with the show from its first season. They were promoted to series regulars for Season 2, then returned to recurring status for Season 3. Reports have left open the possibility of a guest return in a later season.

The cast grows in other directions. New additions include Jim Gaffigan as President Grover Cleveland, Neal Huff as John D. Rockefeller, Dennis Haysbert, Elizabeth Marvel, Dallas Roberts, Andrew Burnap and Adrienne Warren.

Julian Fellowes created the series. Sonja Warfield is co-creator and showrunner. The show began in January 2022 and is set in New York in the 1880s, when old money and new money fought over who belonged at the top of Society.

HBO has not announced a fifth season. The first three seasons are available to stream on HBO Max.
