Apple's First Foldable iPhone Sells Out in Minutes, Ships in 2027
Pre-orders for the $1,999 iPhone Duo opened Friday and sold out within minutes. All configurations are backordered to late January 2027 — a three-month wait that would be an Apple record. The phone arrives in stores October 23.

Apple’s first foldable iPhone sold out within minutes of going up for pre-order Friday. By 8:30 a.m. ET, every configuration on Apple’s website showed an estimated ship date of January 25, 2027. Some buyers were seeing January 29.
The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 for 256GB of storage. It pairs a 5.4-inch outer screen with a 7.6-inch inner display. The top 2TB configuration costs $3,199. Pre-orders opened at 8 a.m. ET on Friday; launch-day pickup inventory sold out too.
Apple described the demand as “nothing short of extraordinary” in a statement, adding that it will keep accepting orders online. The company did not say how many units it set aside for the launch.
Supply was expected to be tight. A Nikkei Asia report last month said Apple was making just a few hundred iPhone Duo units a day — well behind the pace of a typical iPhone launch.
A three-month wait would be a record for Apple. The previous longest shipping delays were around two months for the iPhone 7 Plus in 2016 and five to six weeks for the iPhone X in 2017, according to ZDNet.
The rush has already spilled into resale sites. 9to5Mac found dozens of iPhone Duo pre-orders listed on eBay, with asking prices as high as $5,200 — more than double the base price.
The Duo is Apple’s entry into a category Samsung and Google have led for years. Foldables make up just over 2 percent of global smartphone shipments but nearly 7 percent of industry revenue, according to IDC. The firm estimates Duo shipments could grow about 70 percent next year, which would give Apple roughly 40 percent of the foldable market. “What is new is Apple bringing the form factor to its enormous base of consumers,” IDC analyst Nabila Popal told CNBC.
Dan Ives of Yorkville told CBS News he expects Apple to sell about 10 million units in the coming quarters.
Apple unveiled the Duo on September 9 at John Ternus’s first keynote as CEO. Ternus took over from Tim Cook on September 1; Cook is now executive chairman. The phone goes on sale in Apple Stores on October 23, and the store page will refresh pickup availability starting October 24.
