Antonio Banderas is joining Nicolas Cage in the fifth season of HBO’s True Detective. HBO confirmed the casting Friday in an Instagram post, and said production will begin in 2027.

Cage will play Henry Logan. Banderas will play Rai Garcia. Plot details are under wraps beyond the setting: Jamaica Bay, New York. The move takes the series off the frozen Alaskan terrain of the last season.

Cage confirmed his own casting last weekend at New York Comic Con. Reports first tied him to the role last summer. Banderas joins him as co-lead. The two have never shared the screen before.

Issa López returns as showrunner, writer and director. She took over the series for season 4, True Detective: Night Country, which starred Jodie Foster and became the anthology’s most-watched season, drawing 12.7 million cross-platform viewers, HBO said. The new season will reference Night Country and keep its supernatural lean, López told TheWrap.

HBO ordered the fifth season in February 2024. The anthology’s earlier leads: Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson in season 1, Colin Farrell and Rachel McAdams in season 2, Mahershala Ali in season 3. Foster won an Emmy for Night Country in 2024.
