Mistral Debuts ‘Le Chonk,’ Its Biggest Open-Weight AI Model Yet

The French startup opened a public preview of Mistral Large 4 on Tuesday. The model’s weights go public October 27 — and Mistral says they will rival the best open systems from China.

Mistral opened a public preview on Tuesday of its newest AI model, Mistral Large 4. The French startup calls it “Le Chonk.”

The preview is aimed at developers, cybersecurity experts and state authorities, who will evaluate how the model behaves before it goes wide. Mistral said it would release the model’s weights — the trained parameters that let anyone download, run or modify the system — on Oct. 27.

Mistral said Large 4 would rank among the top open-weight models in the world on aggregate benchmark scores. The company also called it the strongest open-weight model developed outside China by a substantial margin. VentureBeat described the model as a 1-trillion-parameter text model.

Open weights, on purpose

Open-weight releases are Mistral’s signature. Anyone can download, inspect and adapt the models. The company says that freedom protects users’ data and lets them tailor a model to their own needs instead of depending on a vendor.

Mistral argues that closed systems — where the source code, training data and weights stay hidden — can pose a security risk for users, because they sometimes block responses to legitimate cyberdefense requests.

“The model capabilities will further improve as we scale up our training capacity,” said Guillaume Lample, Mistral’s co-founder and chief scientist.

The model was trained on about 4,000 Nvidia Grace Blackwell graphics processing units, the company said, deployed at its own data centers in Europe.

The announcement comes about a month after Mistral closed a funding round led by Samsung Electronics that lifted its valuation above $24 billion. The money gives the company more firepower to develop models and compete with U.S. rivals, including OpenAI and Anthropic.
