Production on The Batman Part II has stopped. For now.
Warner Bros. and DC Studios confirmed Monday that filming in London is “temporarily paused” while director Matt Reeves “focuses on a family matter.” The studio’s statement, first reported by Deadline, added: “Matt has the full support of DC Studios and we look forward to continuing the journey soon.”
Reeves is expected to return. The studio has not named a replacement and has not set a restart date.
The pause is the latest setback for a sequel that has already been delayed for years. The film was first dated for October 2025, then pushed to October 2026, then October 2027. It now sits at Feb. 18, 2028. Deadline’s sources say it is too soon to know whether the pause puts that date at risk. If it holds, nearly six years will separate The Batman (March 2022) from its sequel.
The film
Reeves wrote, directed and produced 2022’s The Batman, which introduced Robert Pattinson as the Caped Crusader to strong reviews and a $772 million box office. He is writing the sequel with Mattson Tomlin and was directing before the pause.
Pattinson returns, along with Jeffrey Wright as Jim Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred and Colin Farrell as the Penguin. New faces include Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Brian Tyree Henry, Charles Dance and Sebastian Koch.
The Batman films sit outside James Gunn’s rebooted DC Universe. A different Batman is expected to appear alongside David Corenswet’s Superman in that shared world.
A long road
This is not the first time a Batman production of Reeves’ has stopped. The original film shut down in 2020 at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, then paused again that September after a member of the production tested positive.
In between, Reeves executive-produced The Penguin, the HBO series built around Farrell’s character. It earned 24 Emmy nominations and won nine, including lead actress for Cristin Milioti.
More details have not been given, out of respect for Reeves’ privacy.
