Musk Pledges a SpaceX Share to Every Kid in America

The SpaceX chief wrote early Monday that he will give one of his shares to every child in the United States next year. At current prices the giveaway would be worth roughly $10 billion.

Elon Musk said early Monday he will give one of his SpaceX shares to every child in America next year. “This will be the first of many,” he wrote on X.

There are roughly 73 million people under 18 in the United States, according to the Census Bureau. SpaceX shares closed Friday at $146.03, which puts the pledge at roughly $10 billion.

The post came a day after Anthropic said it would commit 5 percent of its shares to a new public-benefit fund. Musk replied that the company should give the shares “directly to the public” instead.

Musk did not explain how the shares would be distributed or who would be eligible. SpaceX did not respond to requests for comment, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The most likely path is the federal Trump Accounts program, under which the Treasury is enrolling children in investment accounts that wealthy donors can contribute stock to, the Journal reported. SpaceX president Gwynne Shotwell made a similar pledge in July, donating about $320 million to accounts for 2 million children.

SpaceX went public in June in the largest initial public offering in history, raising $85.7 billion. Shares have risen about 8 percent from the $135 listing price.

Musk remains the world’s richest person. The company reports third-quarter results on Tuesday, with analysts expecting earnings of 14 cents a share on $12.9 billion in sales, according to FactSet.
