Three children and one adult were killed in a shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, on Thursday afternoon. The gunman was a 16-year-old boy. He is also dead.
Two more people — a 7-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher — were taken to the hospital, where police said both are in critical condition.
The children who were killed were 5, 8 and 11 years old, police said. The adult victim was a teacher. The figures were confirmed by Bend police at an evening news conference.
The first 911 call came at about 12:59 p.m. local time, from a caller who reported a shot fired into a car near the school. Officers reached the campus by 1:02 p.m. Moments later, police were told the suspect was dead inside the school.
Police Chief Mike Krantz said the gunman was shot and killed by a member of the public who chased him into the school. The 16-year-old, a Bend resident, was armed with a long gun, the chief said.
Hundreds of officers converged on the school. Families were sent to a reunification point at Journey Church at 61303 South Highway 97. Sen. Jeff Merkley said his team is monitoring the reports and that his heart is with the Bend community. Bend Mayor Melanie Kebler announced a community vigil.
FBI Director Kash Patel said the bureau is on the scene and assisting local authorities.
Silver Rail Elementary serves students in kindergarten through fifth grade. About 459 children were enrolled last year, according to the Oregon Department of Education. The district closed all of its schools on Friday.
The investigation is still in its early stages, and details remain preliminary. This article will be updated as more is confirmed.
