Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut is in the hospital after having a stroke, his office said Sunday.

Murphy, 53, started feeling numbness in his arm on Saturday afternoon while attending his son’s hockey game. He was taken to a local hospital, where doctors determined he had had a stroke.

He was transferred to Johns Hopkins for further monitoring. His chief of staff, Allison Herwitt, said he is responding well to treatment.

“The doctors are encouraged by his progress, he is awake and alert, and we are optimistic he will make a full recovery,” Herwitt said in a statement.

His office did not say what type of stroke Murphy had, or how long he is expected to remain in the hospital.

Murphy has served in the Senate since 2013. Before that, he represented Connecticut’s 5th District in the House of Representatives. He is not on the ballot in Tuesday’s midterm elections.

Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania, who had a stroke during his 2022 campaign, said he hoped Murphy would enjoy “a full and speedy recovery.”

No further details were released on Sunday.
