Netflix Acquires Joel Coen's 'Jack of Spades' for Fall 2027 Theatrical Run

Netflix has bought worldwide rights to Joel Coen's gothic mystery, set in the Scottish Highlands. It will play in theaters in fall 2027 before it streams.

Netflix has acquired worldwide rights to Joel Coen's new film, Jack of Spades. The company will release it in theaters in fall 2027, before it arrives on the streaming service later that year.

Netflix announced the deal on Monday. No exact release date has been set.

Joel Coen directed the film alone. It is his second solo feature, after The Tragedy of Macbeth in 2021. His brother Ethan Coen co-wrote the screenplay but did not co-direct.

The screenplay was written by Joel and Ethan Coen, novelist Eleanor Catton and playwright Conor McPherson. It is the brothers' first project together since The Ballad of Buster Scruggs in 2018.

The film is based on Frances Frederica Montrésor's 1901 novel The Alien: A Story of Middle Age. Netflix describes it as a sinister gothic mystery filled with intrigue and betrayal, set in the atmospheric Scottish Highlands. The story is set in Scotland in the 1880s.

Patsy Ferran, Josh O'Connor, Damian Lewis and Lesley Manville star. The film was shot in Scotland, with production wrapping in Glasgow late last year.

Earlier reports described Ferran's character as Esther Mordaunt, a woman in her thirties, and O'Connor's as a man who returns after being thought dead for decades. Netflix has not confirmed those plot details.

Bruno Delbonnel shot the film. He worked with the Coens on Inside Llewyn Davis and The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, and with Joel Coen on The Tragedy of Macbeth. Carter Burwell composed the score.

Robert Graf, Frances McDormand, Joel Coen, Steven Rales of Indian Paintbrush, and Graham Broadbent and Pete Czernin of Blueprint Pictures produced the film. Donald MacKinnon was executive producer.

The fall theatrical run puts the film in line for awards season. Netflix has used theatrical releases ahead of streaming for its awards contenders in past years, and trade reports framed this deal the same way.
