Prime Video has renewed Carrie for a second season, two weeks after the show’s October 7 premiere.

The streamer announced the pickup Thursday. The eight-episode first season reached No. 1 on Prime Video in more than 105 countries, according to Amazon.

Mike Flanagan will return as showrunner and executive producer. Stephen King, the author of the 1974 novel the series adapts, is an executive producer.

Summer H. Howell plays Carrie White, a teenager whose telekinetic powers collide with the cruelty of a high school built around cyberbullying and social media. Samantha Sloyan plays her mother, Margaret.

Flanagan’s version makes one big break with the source material. In King’s novel, Carrie dies shortly after prom. In the series, she survives and goes on the run. The second season picks up the story in territory the book never reached.

“From the beginning, we imagined a story that goes far beyond the prom,” Flanagan said. King added: “Mike Flanagan and I are excited about what comes next. It’s bound to be thrilling.”

Peter Friedlander, head of global television at Amazon MGM Studios, said the series has connected with longtime King readers and a younger global audience, with particular strength among female viewers.

Flanagan told Collider before launch that his ideal plan was three seasons. “It’s a trilogy, really,” he said. There is no premiere date for the second season.
