Sam Nivola and Nico Parker have been cast in Grandgear, and Paul Giamatti is in talks to join them.

Deadline reported the casting on Tuesday. Nivola and Parker have the film's lead roles. Giamatti, who was pursued for his part, is in talks for a key role. His deal is not closed.

The film is Takashi Yamazaki's first English-language feature. He wrote the original screenplay and will direct. Sony Pictures will distribute it. J.J. Abrams is producing through Bad Robot, alongside Glen Zipper.

Plot details are under wraps. A teaser shown at CinemaCon earlier this year featured two giant mechs fighting in a city, according to reports of the footage. Production is set to begin in 2027.

Yamazaki is best known for Godzilla Minus One. He wrote and directed the 2023 film and supervised its visual effects. It won the Academy Award for best visual effects. Its sequel, Godzilla Minus Zero, opens in theaters on November 6.

Nivola broke out in the third season of The White Lotus. He also appeared in The Perfect Couple, White Noise and Maestro. He next appears in the Hulu thriller Phony, opposite Connie Britton.

Parker played Astrid in the live-action How to Train Your Dragon. She played Joel's daughter Sarah in The Last of Us. Her performance in Suncoast won a breakthrough award at the Sundance Film Festival.

Giamatti is an Oscar nominee for Cinderella Man and The Holdovers. His other films include Sideways and American Splendor. He recently played the villain in the first season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. He next appears with Julianne Moore in Jesse Eisenberg's The Debut.

Reports this week gave different dates for a 2028 release, so this story does not repeat one.
