Kacey Musgraves Announces ‘Tex Mex Tapes,’ a Companion to ‘Middle of Nowhere’
The 16-track album arrives January 15 on Lost Highway Records, with 11 originals, five covers, and four songs sung entirely in Spanish. Two tracks are out now.

Kacey Musgraves announced a new album this week. Middle of Nowhere Vol. 2: Tex Mex Tapes arrives January 15 on Lost Highway Records, eight months after the last one.
The set runs 16 tracks: 11 originals and five covers. Four songs are sung entirely in Spanish.
Two songs are out now
Two songs from the album came out at midnight Friday. “Weekend in Texas” is a breezy original about passing the time in her home state. “Mi Tesoro” is her rendition of a Norteño classic, delivered in a reverb-heavy style.
The project digs into the music Musgraves grew up around. Accordions, dance rhythms and romantic ballads have traveled back and forth across the Texas-Mexico border for generations, shaping everything from Western swing to Tejano and Norteño.
What’s on the record
The collection includes a newly recorded Spanish-language version of “Uncertain, TX” with Intocable, the Texas-born Norteño band. Musgraves previously recorded the song with Willie Nelson; that version went to No. 1 at Texas radio.
“Tú Solo Tú” was recorded live in Mexico City with Mariachi Oro de América. The covers also include George Strait’s “All My Exes Live in Texas,” Freddy Fender’s “Before the Next Teardrop Falls” and “(Hey Baby) Qué Pasó?”
Per the announcement, the album picks up where Middle of Nowhere left off, “expanding on themes of solitude, contentment and finding beauty in the in-between.”
The tour and the awards
Musgraves is wrapping her 34-date Middle of Nowhere Tour. She plays Oakland Arena tonight, then closes with two nights at Seattle’s Climate Pledge Arena on October 26 and 27.
She heads into the CMA Awards on November 18 with five nominations, including Album of the Year and Female Vocalist of the Year. “Dry Spell” is up for Song of the Year and Music Video of the Year. “Horses and Divorces,” her duet with Miranda Lambert, is nominated for Musical Event of the Year.
